Technical Specialist – Automation (Power Innovation Commissioning)

Role Overview

A power and energy infrastructure programme is bringing on an Automation Technical Specialist to support commissioning, energization, and startup of BESS, substation, and generation assets. This is a hands-on field role sitting at the point where control systems meet live plant — validating logic, closing punch lists, and turning systems over to Operations. You'll be the technical reference point for automation on site.

What You'll Do

  • Provide advanced automation support across commissioning, startup, and operational turnover for BESS, substations, and generation assets
  • Coordinate FAT/SAT activities, systemization, and punch-list closure while managing field resources and cost
  • Support development and execution of commissioning plans, procedures, and automation test protocols
  • Validate control system configuration, startup/shutdown logic, alarm management, and SCADA integration
  • Troubleshoot PLC/DCS/HMI issues in real time during energization and startup
  • Own commissioning documentation and turnover packages, including redline validation and tracking
  • Deliver technical briefings, commissioning readiness reviews, and post-event summaries to project leadership
  • Anticipate integration issues and performance gaps, and drive corrective action plans with Engineering, Construction, Operations, and OEMs
  • Support control system cybersecurity, patching, and hardware lifecycle/refresh activity through operational transition
  • Contribute to the Approved Manufacturer List (AML) by validating automation equipment performance and field lessons learned
  • Support operator training and knowledge transfer

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Minimum 8 years' progressive experience in power generation, energy infrastructure, commissioning, or industrial automation (High School Diploma / GED required)
  • Solid working knowledge of PLCs, DCS, and SCADA/HMI systems
  • Communication protocols: Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850 or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of enterprise automation platforms (AssetCentre or equivalent) for configuration management, backups, version control, and compliance
  • Demonstrated experience supporting commissioning workflows — system turnover packages, redline validation, documentation tracking
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E, IEEE, and NERC standards as applicable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard field reporting tools
  • Safety-first mindset, particularly around energization and high-risk commissioning activity

Preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related discipline

What's In It For You

  • Front-line role on a live power innovation commissioning programme spanning BESS, substations, and generation
  • Technical lead and custodian responsibility for automation commissioning standards
  • Direct exposure across Engineering, Construction, Operations, and OEM teams
  • 7-on/7-off rotation — full week off between hitches
  • Competitive hourly contract rate (shared on application)
